A History of Turning Challenges into Opportunities
FLEXcon began in 1956 as a vision in founder Myles McDonough's mind. The company began as a two-person shop in his Spencer, Massachusetts garage, producing plastic film laminates that were used on women’s shoes and handbags. Today FLEXcon is the leading global polymeric coating resource with sales of $300 million annually and more than 1,000 employees worldwide. FLEXcon, whose employees average 13 years of service, strives for an operational and innovative organization that will benefit local, regional, and world-wide markets.
Through the decades, we have expanded our capabilities and grown along with our customers. One thread underlies all our success stories: the desire to turn our customers' challenges into opportunities one application at a time. In the 1960s, we added dyeing, brushing, embossing, and topcoating to our capabilities. In the 1970s, with growth in sheet- and roll-form labeling, we added film products for prime labeling to our mix. In the 1980s, we adopted a Quality Management System and developed new products including our THERMLfilm® line for print technologies coming on the scene. In the 1990s, we expanded our operations with a new 400,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Nebraska to better serve the central and western U.S., we also opened our first non-U.S. manufacturing facility in Scotland. We adopted OSHA’s VPP safety process and received our first ISO certification. On the product side, we pioneered such industry staples as the “no-label-look” label on glass bottles, working with Clearly Canadian.
In the 2000s, FLEXcon introduced a comprehensive Value-Better-Supreme (VBS) product offering which includes more than 450 proven, readily available film/adhesive products for the most popular applications. We continue to develop and offer innovative products. Recent examples include a line of tacky silicone adhesives for extreme-temperature bonding applications and a cost-effective film product for bubble-free labels on outdoor power equipment.
FLEXcon has been in business for more than 50 years and has remained privately held and family-owned for our entire history. Now, more than ever, we attribute our success to our focus on the “four cornerstones” that have sustained our business since day one – our customers, employees, suppliers, and communities. Giving our customers the total services they require is the best route to meeting their unique needs and expanding their markets. Our employees are our most valuable asset, and have made FLEXcon what it is today. Establishing good relationships with our suppliers is essential to product development and mutual business growth. We recognize our obligation to be a good corporate citizen and contributing to the betterment of the communities we serve. Going forward, FLEXcon will continue to focus on those four cornerstones to build and maintain the long-lasting relationships we value so highly.
